The Arts Department operates under the Arts Strategy 2011-2015. It is embedded in a number of contexts one of which is “Arts and Young People”. This targets young people through 4 different strands;

  • Youth Theatre : Barecheek Theatre Company facilitates the youth theatre strand via the County Wexford Youth Theatre. Currently there are over 9- active members aged between 11-23 years divided into relevant age groups.

  • Youth Film : Based in St. Michaels Theatre, New Ross. This project trains young people aged 13-20 years in the medium of film-making. Over 400 young people have participated to date. Although the base is in St. Michaels Theatre, outreach film projects are facilitated throughout the county.

  • Youth Dance

  • Arts in Education : The “Living Arts Project” is a long term artists education scheme operated in partnership with Wexford Arts Centre. It involved artists in residence in four primary schools in County Wexford. The participation rate is 270 and the audience for this project is 2250.

In addition to directly targeting young people through the measures above, Wexford Arts Office also operates Arts and Health and Arts and Disabilities strands which are also open to young people. The Arts Office also administers the “Artist In The Community” scheme which has made the arts accessible to local communities. Participating communities must provide matching funding (in kind) and there socially disadvantaged applications are looked upon favourably.
