There are currently four Social Workers employed by Wexford County Council who cover County Wexford between them. They deal with the following issues: homelessness, Local Authority tenants and applicants, dealing with issues within estates and supporting members of the Traveller Community to find suitable accommodation.
Dealing with the accommodation needs of homeless people forms a huge part of the role of the Social Work Department. This is dealt with at a policy, inter-agency and on-the-ground level. The Homeless Action Team (HAT) meets once per month to respond to the housing needs of individuals. This inter-agency team is also chaired by the Social Work Team.
They support members of the Traveller community to source suitable accommodation (housing or halting site) and also provide support to families once accommodation is sourced. They are responsible for conducting an annual count of Traveller Families and are involved in the formulation of the Traveller Accommodation Programme.
Social Workers are the designated Child Protection Liaison Officers within the County Council and also deliver Child Protection training and information sessions to local authority staff.
There is a Social Worker / Designated Child Protection Liaison Officer on duty each day in the Housing Dept., County Hall.
